OET READING SUB TEST
The OET listening section is divided into three separate parts. Parts A, B and C which include 42 questions. The exam lasts about 45 minutes. You will be asked to listen to audio recordings related to general healthcare. One thing you have to take care of is that the audio will be played only once. So a candidate should be diligent enough to listen to the audio.
TYPES OF THE OET LISTENING QUESTIONS ASKED
The listening section consists of three parts as mentioned earlier.
Part 1
In part 1, multiple choice questions are asked based on the audio resources provided.
Part 2
In part 2, the candidates will hear an audio lecture. Listen to the audio very carefully and you will be asked to fill in the missing information such as names, dates or medical terminologies etc.
Part 3
In part 3, two groups consist of 6 questions each. It is based on recordings that are four to five minutes in length. It might be a presentation, an interview or general topics based on healthcare.
STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING LISTENING SKILLS
There are several measures that can be taken to improve listening skills. Hearing and listening are two different entities. Listening requires more attention. Active listening is a must , especially for professional exams.
If you have any doubts at the time of coaching, feel free to clarify all your doubts. Avoid distractions. Listening is an activity. Focus on the person talking.
- It is very important to maintain eye contact with the speaker. Unnecessary distractions should be avoided.
- You should not judge the speaker during the interview.
- Don’t interrupt the interviewer. Cultivate patience and pick up the questions he or she asks.
- Wait for a moment to ask questions back to the interview panel, if you don’t understand what they say.
- Body language is also an integral part of listening. Pay attention to nonverbal cues like gestures, eye contact etc.
- To improve listening skills, practice listening daily. Listen to medical lectures or audio podcasts related to the medical field.
PRACTICE EXERCISES FOR LISTENING SKILLS
Active listening is a valuable skill and it should be practiced fruitfully. Ask open ended questions to learn more. Get to know different question types that could be asked for the exam. Developing concentration is very essential.
OET READING SUBTEST
OET reading subtest at a glance: It is 60 mins in duration, there are 3 parts in the subtest and 42 questions in total.In Part A of the OET reading test, you have to answer 20 questions on 4 separate texts. You have 15 minutes to do this on Test day. The texts in this section will be labelled Text A to Text D, and present information in different ways, but all relate to one health condition or type of treatment. Write your answers on the spaces provided in the question paper.
Part B of the reading test is very similar to part B of the listening test. In reading part B, you will read 6 different extracts from documents giving background information for healthcare professionals and answer one question about each extract. You have 45 minutes to complete Parts B and C of the reading test. You should allow roughly 10 minutes to complete this section so you leave yourself enough time to complete Part C.
In Part C of the reading test, there are two texts, with 8 questions on each one. The type of texts you will encounter will be in the style of articles published for a healthcare audience in a healthcare setting. They will not be specifically aimed at any one healthcare profession, and will use terminology that can be understood by any healthcare professional. There is a combined time of 45 minutes for Parts B and C. If you spent roughly 10 minutes to complete Part B of the reading test, you will have 35 minutes to complete Part C of the test.
